El Rodeo Elementary School

The $165M reconstruction, modernization, and seismic upgrade of the El Rodeo Elementary School was completed and re-opened to students for the 24-25 academic school year school.
The site consisted primarily of five reinforced concrete shear wall buildings – the first three built in 1927 and the final two in 1960. The campus had been shuttered in 2018 due to identified seismic safety concerns, a myriad of ADA issues and antiquated building systems throughout in dire need of modernization and updating to meet the current and future needs of BHUSD students and faculty.
The campus includes a 250-person theater, beautiful interior WPA era murals from the time of its original construction, a beaux arts dome at the grand building entrance, and exterior tile throughout the entire façade. These buildings are well worth investing in, preserving, and saving as a treasured asset for the community for generations to come.
