Capital Milling
Los Angeles, California
The Capitol Milling complex began as a flour mill and the first installation may have been the very first building constructed in the City of LA. The earliest milling operations on the site are said to go back as far as the early 1830s with some of the existing structure possibly surviving from that time. The majority of the project involved seismic retrofitting of the sprawling URM complex – and complex was it ever!
Use of steel braced frames and shotcrete provided increased in plane seismic strengthening. New diaphragms and wall ties were added to strengthen interconnectivity between building elements and address pull away effects from out of the plane loads.
